Mpilenhle Recycling is a recycling business based in Newcastle, KZN the business was started by three young entrepreneurs from Osizweni township, armed with passion and belief that they could make a positive contribution to the community of KZN through the recovery of recyclable materials

The business was formalised in 2009 and currently recovers and average of 275 tons per month of cardboard, paper, aluminium cans and various plastic products. The business currently diverts over 3,300 tons of recyclable waste annually from the landfill sites in Amajuba District (KZN), prolonging landfill space, creating employment, and contributing towards preserving our precious raw materials including trees and oil. The business currently operates within the Amajuba District, directly employs 41 permanent staff, and financially incentivises over 550 people in the Amajuba District for taking part in recycling. The business sources recyclable materials from landfill sites, township collectors, shopping malls and office parks. The recyclable materials are sorted and processed at our Buyback Centres before they are transported to our various customers; including Neopak, Extrupet, and Scrapcore.

Company History

Mpilenhle Recycling was started in 2009 by three young entrepreneurs from Osizweni in Newcastle, KZN with a borrowed bakkie recovering only recyclable glass, and only recovering 3 tons per month initially. The business has grown to recover a seven recyclable products including glass, paper, cardboard, aluminium and various plastics; recovering 275 tons per month.

2021 - Beyond

Mpilenhle continues to bring strong partnerships with municipalities, government departments and other stakeholders in impacting communities through recycling. The business is also partnering with successful businesses in bringing innovative recycling technologies to South Africa
2019 - 2020

Mpilenhle makes a strategic decision to focus on expanding its foothold in KZN, and de-invests in Hammanskraal. The business is now investing all of its resources in expanding its presence and impact in the KwaZulu-Natal where its vision is to be the most innovative recycling business in the province.
2016 - 2018

Mpilenhle invested a lot of time into developing its business acumen, through participating in a number of enterprise development programmes including participating in the JP Morgan Enterprise development programme hosted by the Gordon’s Institute of Business Science (GIBS).
2013 - 2015

Mpilenhle spread its wings, and included a branch in Hammanskraal in Gauteng. The business also invested in equipment and vehicles to increase efficiency and productivity. With assistance from Edgegrowth, the business received business support and financial support.
2011

Mpilenhle buys out a local Nampak agent and increased its product range to include glass, paper, cardboard and various plastics.
2009

Mpilenhle is started by three young entrepreneurs from Osizweni in Newcastle recovering only recyclable glass initially.
Mpilenhle Recycling has grown from humble beginnings into a trusted suppliers for paper and cardboard in the Northen KZN region.
